In 1975, French brand Le Coq Sportif outfitted tennis player Arthur Ashe for his Wimbledon match against Jimmy Connors. Ashe became the first African American to win the tournament; he went on to win three Grand Slam titles, and he was ranked the number 1 tennis player in the world. His signature Le Coq Sportif shoes, with clean lines and perforated uppers, remain a tennis shoe classic, but interestingly, these weren’t the only shoes to bear Ashe’s name. He also had a lesser-known brick red and white signature sneaker with Adidas.
