Nike’s Free series of shoes, designed by Tobie Hatfield and Eric Avar, translates the experience of running barefoot into a sneaker. Legendary running coach Vin Lananna’s barefoot running philosophy and motto, “Less Shoe, More You,” inspired the design team, especially Hatfield, who is also a proponent of barefoot running.

The Free 5.0’s articulated midsole and lightweight woven upper allow for great flexibility and movement. The number “5.0” refers to the level of support offered by the sneaker, zero being barefoot and 10 being fully supported.
