In 2008, British-born Carri Munden, designer and creative director of her label Cassette Playa, collaborated with Nike to remake the classic Nike Blazer Premium using reptile-embossed, peach-colored uppers, electric purple outsoles, and gradated turquoise heel tabs. Cassette Playa’s aesthetic, popularized by musicians such as the Klaxons and M.I.A., captured a particular moment in the 2000s when Internet-inspired fashions were challenging the conventions of gendered clothing. Munden incorporates bold graphics and neon colors that were previously rejected in men’s fashion to create unisex designs that seem at once futuristic and retro.
