For the 2010 World Cup, Puma commissioned artist Kehinde Wiley, known for his highly patterned, heroic portraits of Black men in poses that allude to European art history, to create paintings of three African soccer stars sponsored by Puma. Wiley also provided Puma a selection of African patterns from his existing paintings to create a limited-edition series of shoes and apparel celebrating the individual football teams, as well as Africa as a whole. The material used to create this rare pair of sneakers features embroidered, rather than printed, designs.
